Description

These oversized, bakery-style cookies feature a signature craggily top and a soft, doughy center packed with creamy milk chocolate. This recipe captures the iconic texture and warmth of the original, perfect for satisfying a monumental sweet tooth with a homemade touch.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a large, heavy-duty baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream together the softened butter, light brown sugar, and granulated sugar on medium speed for 3 minutes until pale and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs, vanilla extract, baking soda, kosher salt, and cornstarch, then mix for an additional minute, scraping down the sides as needed.
  4. Turn the mixer to the lowest setting and gradually add the all-purpose flour until just combined, then fold in the milk chocolate chips by hand.
  5. Portion dough into rounded 1/3 cup balls (approx. 4.2 oz); break each ball in half and press back together with the jagged edges facing upward to create a craggily top.
  6. Place dough balls on the prepared baking sheet with 3 inches of space between them and bake for 10 to 11 minutes until edges are lightly golden.
  7. Press a few extra chocolate chips into the warm tops and allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5-10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

For the best results, ensure your oven is fully preheated to the specified temperature before the cookies go in, as the initial blast of high heat is what sets the unique texture. If you prefer a cleaner look, you can skip the breaking-and-reforming step, though you will lose the signature bakery aesthetic and the varied texture of the peaks and valleys.
