Description

These classic Southern spritz cookies are buttery, light, and perfectly flavored with a touch of almond and vanilla. They are the ideal treat for holiday gatherings, offering a nostalgic melt-in-your-mouth texture that pairs beautifully with coffee or tea.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Optional sprinkles for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C) and prepare ungreased baking sheets or use silicone mats.
  2. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together for about 3 minutes until the mixture is smooth, pale, and fluffy.
  3. Add the room temperature egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract, then beat on high speed for 1 minute until fully combined.
  4. Turn the mixer to low speed and slowly incorporate the flour and salt until a soft dough forms.
  5. Fill a cookie press fitted with a decorative plate and click the cookies onto the cold baking sheets, spacing them 2 inches apart.
  6. Bake for 7 to 9 minutes until edges are barely golden, then let rest on the sheet for 5 minutes before moving to a wire rack to cool.

Notes

To ensure your cookies hold their intricate designs, always use room temperature butter rather than melted, and avoid using parchment paper as the dough needs the grip of the pan to release from the press. If your kitchen is warm, try chilling your baking sheets in the freezer for a few minutes between batches to help the dough stick and prevent spreading.
